Real Madrid VS. Villarreal Soccer Match 2006

One of the best left-backs in football has retired from the game. Former Brazilian defender Roberto Carlos, today confirmed his retirement from playing active football, which was announced by Anzhi Makhachkala’s Dutch manager Guus Hiddink.

The former Real Madrid player moved to the Russian club,on a player-coaching basis.

Carlos was one of the players that heralded the movement of high-profile players to Anzhi, having moved from Fernabahce, but he has not played a game for the Russian club since March.

Roberto was a world class football player. Unfortunately, he no longer plays. Every master’s career ends at some point,”Hiddink said, according to a transcript in Russian on Anzhi’s website fc-anji.ru.

However, Roberto is now fully involved in developing the new Anzhi. I am sure he will contribute to the growth of not only the Dagestani club but all of Russian football.”

Carlos who won 125 caps for Brazil, and playing in three World Cups,is best remembered for his ability to link up with attack, and his efforts in scoring free-kicks. One of the spectacular ones,he tucked away was the one everybody thought was going away, but found its way into the net against France in 1997 at the Tournoi de France. Which was termed the ‘Banana Kick.’

Perhaps Nigerians would remember him for the own goal,he scored against his country, when Nigeria played Brazil in the semi-finals at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
