Roger Federer made sure he retained his World number one spot,by defeating Novak Djokovic in the ATP Cincinnati masters.
Federer defeated Djokovic 6-0,7-6 to claim a career high of 76 titles and the 5th win at the Cincinnati masters. The win ensured that Federer, ended Djokovic’s 15 straight victories on hard courts,and equalled Rafael Nadal’s 21 Masters title.
Federer who won the Wimbledon Open,but lost in the finals of the singles event to Andy Murray at the Lodon 2012 Olympics,would be aiming to use the Cincinnati Masters to prepare for the US Open,which kicks off on August 27.
With Rafael Nadal pulling out of the US Open,Federer will have to contend with Djokovic and Murray in his quest to win a record 18 Grand Slam title.
“It’s been an amazing week and a magical summer and I’m looking forward to New York now,” Federer said.
It took Federer just 20 minutes to subdue Djokovic in the first set,with the Swiss going on to claim the second on a tie break 7-6(9-7)
Speaking after the game Djokovic said: “He was the better player and started off really well and I made a lot of double faults and unforced errors.
“I had my chances in the second set and missed them and Roger deserves the trophy,” the Serb said.
